As every few years, the question for me again comes up in 2025: World Magic Championship or vacation? It would be particularly easy for me this year because the World Magic Championship 2025 (FISM) takes place in Turin — almost right in front of my front door! Nevertheless, as almost always, I will travel to Sweden with my wife. (No coincidence — she is Swedish 😉).
So far I've only been to one Wizarding World Congress — in Stockholm, of course. And, as you might have guessed, I spent a lot of time outside because my mentor Jim Cellini was an avid smoker, and I often stood next to him to watch.
That sounds exaggerated, but I actually saw many exciting shows and met fascinating people at this conference. But after two days, to be honest, I was sensory overload — so many impressions that I couldn't see a card trick for two weeks afterwards.
I've had many over the years Magic Congresses visited, usually one to two days. For me personally, these smaller events are often more pleasant:
• You know most colleagues
• the program is manageable,
• The exchange is more intensive.
At the FISM World Magic Championships On the other hand, it is a Superlative event:
• Several days full of competition numbers — from absolutely brilliant to more average,
• the latest magic gadgets and vendor stands,
• a stage for the international magic scene.
Although the Magic World Championships 2025 in Turin It will undoubtedly be a highlight, I will remain true to my personal tradition: I prefer to enjoy the magic on a smaller scale — and especially the magic of Sweden with my wife this summer.
Several times this summer I thought to myself: It would have been cool to be part of the 2025 World Magic Championship in Turin. But sometimes life writes better stories.
One unexpected bonus point of my vacation was that Carl-Einar Häckner — the Swedish jack-of-all-trades and bird of paradise of show business — presented his new full-length program in a theatre just a few minutes from my house. Of course I was in the audience. And apparently he wasn't in Turin either.
It was a magical and wonderful evening, which I won't forget anytime soon. For everyone who doesn't know Häckner yet: He also appears again and again in germany and even in the switzerland on. The photo above was taken in Casino Theater Winterthur — my wife is also a big fan of Carl.
